Farewell Woody

Our darling Woody has finally given up.  We knew she wasn't looking good, and although a week of antibiotics helped, I think that old age got the better of her.  Late last week she laid a lash, which is apparently common in ex-batts and older girls.  From then on she was very subdued, although still eating a bit.
So Salisbury is on her own, which I don't think she'll mind too much, with the neighbours chooks through the garden fence.  But hopefully we'll get some more ex-batts in September and before then we might acquire a couple of the neighbours hybrids which are not yet at point of lay, so young girls for us!

Bloody mites

Literally.  Still haven't got rid of them from the chook house since last summer.  I keep squashing the buggers whilst sat here at my computer, since I picked up a few in the seconds it took to close the girls in tonight.  Some more serious bug-killing action is required at the weekend. *scratch scratch*.

Lunch

I'm eating home-grown radishes and lollo rossa in a wrap.  Feeling very smug.

Of course, on it's own that would be very boring, so I've also put in a left over sausage, a bit of ham and a dollop of mayo.  Nom nom nom.

1st June - Summer is here!

Kittens have been venturing in the garden for a couple of days now.  They love it.  They also enjoy a game of chase when we want them back inside.
Elderflowers are mostly out now, so made the first batch of champagne and wine yesterday.  Looking forward to sunny evenings, popping bottles and relaxing with the kits in the garden.

Garden update

The daffodils have flowered!  I love the first sign of spring, and the daffs near our back door make me smile every morning now.  I'm also pleased to see Dwarf iris 'Harmony' has raised it's little head after planting last October time.  It's even sprung up in a patch I completely forgot I planted it in!

The garlic is on its way up, which is good news as we only got it in the ground about a month ago and I thought it would be slow to take off since we missed the coldest, shortest days of winter.

The chooks are learning to perch, as of last night when I transferred Jemima and Woody from their comfy nest boxes to sit next to Salisbury on the wooden perch.  Woody was mystified, Jemima was defiant and telling me off.  But they both stayed put.  Even laying an egg this morning, Woody hadn't budged.  Luckily (or not, some would think) the egg had a soft landing in a pile of poo!  After a quick scrub, it'll be perfect for breakfast next weekend. :)

Sonny and Mario have been brilliant fun so far, they're proper looney and probably short of a few brain cells after the number of crashes, bumps and tumbles they've had.  They are also superb farters.  Our house now has a unique aroma...  Oh well.

Meow!

Success at last!! We found a mate for Mario, and picked him up last Monday.
Introducing, Sonny!!

One week younger than Mario, but full of energy, he's really settled in over the last week.
Both are scoffing far to much food, and the stink that results is horrendous!  Boys boys boys.  Bleurgh!
